Ambient Scribe Increased Provider Margin

The Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO) and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at a large multi-state health system faced decreasing margins quarter over quarter due to clinician staffing shortages and limited schedule availability for patients. The metric for success was to increase margin by 300 basis points within 2 quarters. We achieved this with an ambient scribe AI.
We analyzed the enterprise landscape and determined the average clinician was spending 20% of their time documenting clinical notes. This administrative burden reduced patient throughput and constrained the system’s ability to grow revenue without adding staff. The company had different electronic health record (EHR) platforms by location, resulting in non-standard processes and delays in billing.
Our goal was to increase care quality and reduce administrative tasks across the care team. To achieve this we deployed speech AI to act as an ambient medical scribe that is activates upon patient consent. Natural language processing to extract clinical meaning, generative AI to produce structured documentation, and agentic workflows to interact across multiple EMR platforms and other systems.
Within six months, the health system achieved a fundamental shift in how clinical documentation occurred. After-hours documentation dropped by more than 60%, and physicians increased available patient appointment capacity by over 20%. For the CFO and CMIO, the transformation produced both financial and clinical benefits. The increase in clinical capacity improved patient access across multiple specialties, while faster documentation accelerated revenue capture. EBITDA margin expanded by approximately 300 basis points without adding physicians or expanding facilities. Most importantly, physician and patient satisfaction improved significantly. By removing administrative friction, the organization restored clinician focus on patient care while patients are able to access care when they need it.
